Lecturer position in Economic and Social History, Utrecht University

08-09-2022 08:31

The Department of History and Art History seeks to appoint a temporary lecturer in Economic and Social History. The lecturer will be involved in high-quality teaching and supervision tasks within the regular programmes offered by the Economic and Social History group on the BA and MA level. Candidates are expected to teach a wide range of subjects, including those beyond their own expertise and will also be expected to teach in Dutch.

REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidates will have:
• Experience teaching undergraduate students and a commitment to thesis supervision and internships;
• A clear teaching philosophy, which should be elaborated on in the letter of motivation;
• A PhD degree or far advanced PhD trajectory in Economic and Social History or a related discipline;
• The ambition and ability to contribute fully to the academic life of the research group and the department.
• During the first year of employment, most courses will be taught in Dutch. As a result, only candidates who can immediately teach in Dutch will be considered.
Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one. Since our department includes education in both Dutch and English, candidates are expected to be proficient in both languages. Candidates from abroad must fulfill the conditions set by the IND to work in the Netherlands.

OFFER & WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The initial appointment, from 1 November 2022, will be on a temporary basis for a period of three to four years (0.7 FTE), depending on previous UU contracts. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €3.974 and €5.439 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
The department is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We welcome employees who contribute to the diversity of our faculty through their unique backgrounds and perspective. The Faculty of Humanities has around 6,000 students and 900 staff members. It comprises four knowledge domains: Philosophy and Religious Studies, History and Art History, Media and Culture Studies, and Languages, Literature and Communication. With its research and education in these fields, the faculty aims to contribute to a better understanding of the Netherlands, Europe, and the world in a rapidly changing social and cultural context. The enthusiastic and committed colleagues and the excellent amenities in the historical city center of Utrecht, where the faculty is housed, contribute to an inspiring working environment.
The candidate will specifically be working within the Economic and Social History group. A profile description is available at https://www.uu.nl/en/research/economic-and-social-history.
