On Monday, November 9, at 16:00, in Room Στ-1 (ΚΕΝΙ: Center for Modern History Research) on the 6th floor of the New Building of Panteion University (136, Syggrou Avenue), the Greek Economic History Association invites you to the lecture given in English by Dr. Eirini Kalogeropoulou-Yalçin (Bogazici University) entitled «Household income, social stratification and the structure of agrarian production in the Vardar lowlands and Halkidiki, according to the 1844 Fiscal Temettüat Registers of the kaza of Thesaloniki».

Discussants: ass. Prof. Antonis Hatzikyriakou (Panteion University) and Dr. Burcu Isil-Sevgener (Panteion University)

Through the examination of the Ottoman Temettuat Registers of 1844 we aim to discern the particular economic structure of clusters of rural communities in diversified geographical settings within the periphery (the provincial district) of Thessaloniki (Selanik). In this context we study household income portfolios and differentiation of income levels among groups of settlements and within communities, while we also examine key factors of local agrarian structures, such as cultivated and fallow land surfaces, number of draught animals and household sizes. Lastly, among our aims is also to address questions and observations expressed in the context of the 'chiftlik debate' related to differentiation of economic affluence and land yields between lowland and hilly/mountain settlements..
