The Douro Wine Region
The Douro Wine Region (DDR) is located in Northeast Portugal, in the Douro River basin, surrounded by craggy mountains that give it very particular soil and climacteric characteristics. It is one of the oldest (since 1756) demarcated wine regions (Douro Demarcated Region-DDR), spreads over a total area of approximately 250000 hectares, with almost 43,000 hectares being occupied by different vineyards´ systems.
In 2001, UNESCO classified 24,600 hectares of RDD (along the banks of Douro river and its tributaries) as a world heritage site as an evolving cultural landscape of outstanding beauty that is at the same time reflection of its technological, social, and economic evolution.
The DDR produces two designations of origin, the fortified Porto and Douro (still) wines, with completely different market trajectories. Port wine has been on the international market for around three centuries, while the Douro is a new entrant of around three decades and a more recent public recognition. In addition, structured around the Douro River (cruises between Oporto and the Spanish border) and the link to wine tourism, the Douro has witnessed strong growth in recent years and is today endowed with excellent tourist amenities.
