Postponement of the 4th International Conference in Economic and Social History

31-05-2021 11:08

It is with a heavy heart that we are obliged to announce the further postponement of the 4th International Conference in Economic and Social History, titled “Varieties of Capitalism in the Mediterranean (18th-20th c.).”

Following our recent message, participants voiced their concerns about the safety of an in-person event, while others were alarmed about the possibility of incurring travel expenses for a conference that might (still) be cancelled at the last minute, for reasons beyond anyone’s control. At the same time, the organisers share the opinion expressed by most of you during our recent survey, that an in-person conference is far preferable to an online event; we also believe no intermediate solution would be either practical or effective.

Taking the above into consideration and recognising the need to make a clear-cut decision early enough for everyone to plan ahead, the Greek Economic History Association and the History Department of the Ionian University have decided to defer the conference until the fall of 2022, in the hope of being able to welcome everyone on Corfu, under normal circumstances. Given the time distance, a supplementary call for papers will be issued in the Spring of 2022, to give new colleagues an opportunity to join the project; it goes without saying that all accepted papers are still welcome, though everyone will be given an opportunity to revise their original submissions.

Please accept our sincere apologies. Despite the improved outlook, your feedback encouraged us to err on the side of caution, while still upholding the goal to organise a normal conference – albeit one year later.

Professor Socrates Petmezas,                                                    On behalf of the Organising Committee

Head of the Greek Economic History Association                         Assoc. Prof. Sophia Laiou
