Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Modern Greek Studies, School of History, Classics and Archaeology, University of Edinburgh

The Opportunity:

With generous support from the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh is pleased to invite applications for an open-ended Lectureship/Senior Lectureship in Modern Greek Studies. Applications are welcome from specialists in any area of Greek history, literature or culture from 1453 to the present. 

The postholder will pursue an active research agenda ideally drawing on existing strengths and synergies in the School, such as ancient Greek and Byzantine history, literature and culture; classical reception studies; early modern and modern intellectual and/or political history including the history of revolutions or of dictatorships in the twentieth century; diaspora studies; etc., and/or College, e.g. European studies, modern languages, comparative/transnational literary, film and cultural studies, history of art, etc. The candidate will play a key role in developing a new focus on Modern Greek Studies comprising of attractive specialised modules and be expected to recruit and supervise doctoral students and contribute to building up a research culture in the field.

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • A PhD in a related field
  • Proven ability to teach Modern Greek Studies at all levels.
  • Portfolio of excellent research in any aspect of Modern Greek history, culture or literature (post 1453 to present), including in the form of recent or forthcoming publications, commensurate with career stage.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written Standard Modern Greek (Κοινή Νεοελληνική) and familiarity with a range of registers of written Greek in use since 1453.
  • Evidence of potential or experience of attracting external funding, commensurate with career stage.
  • Vision of how to create an inclusive curriculum of Modern Greek Studies, relevant and sensitive to contemporary questions and debates.
