Research Associate (predoc) position, Center for Research in Economics and Comparative Development, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Lisbon
31-07-2025 11:42A Research Associate is required to work for the Center for Research in Economics and Comparative Development / Centro de Investigação em Economia e Desenvolvimento Comparado (CIEDEC), directed by Álvaro Matias and Guilherme Lambais in the Faculty of Economics and Business, Lusíada University of Lisbon.
The position starts on 10 September 2025, and the contract is for one year, extendable for one more year depending on performance, in a total of two years. The researcher will be an Associate of CIEDEC based in the Lisbon university campus.
The Research Associate will be integrated into CIEDEC's core team, working under the overall supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), and contributing to ongoing research, organisational, and dissemination activities led by the Centre's leadership. Mentorship will be provided throughout the contract.
Salary: we offer the same as FCT scholarships
Hours: full time, 35 hours per week
Duration: One year term, extendable for one more year
Location: Rua da Junqueira, Lisboa, Portugal (hybrid working arrangements may be considered)

The duties of the position include:
Research Assistance in Economic History:
- RA work in a large economic history project in prices, wages, and population undertaken in partnership with the Arthur Lewis Lab for Comparative Development at the University of Manchester.
- RA work may include:
- Literature revision
- Search for relevant data to the project in secondary and primary sources in a systematic manner based on a research design
- Visits to historical archives to collect data in primary sources
- Database building
- Analysing and interpreting data
- Opportunities of interaction with members of the Arthur Lewis Lab.
Methodology:
- Assisting in developing new research methods and extending the research portfolio.
Project Management and Support to Academic Activities:
- Attending, contributing to and actively participating in team meetings and research seminars.
- Reporting on research progress and presenting information on research findings at team meetings and similar bodies.
- Providing guidance as required to support staff and students who may be assisting with research.
- Assist the PI and research team in the administration of the research project as appropriate.
- Contributing to the organisation and logistical coordination of selected undergraduate courses during the 2025–2026 school year, in alignment with project-related academic activities.
Dissemination:
- Contributing to research reports and collective publications.
- Contributing to knowledge transfer/stakeholder engagement activities.
- Writing, evidence to Stakeholders, Policy Briefings and Infographics, including the maintenance of a project website.
- Assisting with the organisation of project workshops and seminars.
- Assisting with the organisation of research-related events, including seminars, workshops, and conferences.
Person specification
Essential:
- A master's degree in economics or a related subject, or equivalent status.
- An excellent command of written and spoken English and Portuguese.
- Initiative, motivation, ability to work in teams and to liaise with other team members and project collaborators.
- The ability to organize own research activities, manage own time and quality standards, prioritizing workload and meeting deadlines.
Desirable:
- Research experience in topics related to the project theme.
- Plans to pursue doctoral studies in related subjects.
- Training in statistical research methods including specialist knowledge of quantitative methods, in particular, econometrics.
- Demonstrable experience in using the following software: Excel, R Studio, and Stata.
- Ability to code to a good standard in R and Stata.
- Teaching experience.
- Experience in data-gathering and analysis.
- Experience in carrying out first-hand data collection and analysis of kinds relevant to the project.
- Experience of working in research teams.
- Experience of doing research in Economic History.
- Experience of organising academic workshops or similar events.
- Experience in research administration.
- Evidence of emerging track record in academic publications.
- Evidence of working collaboratively across organisational boundaries and with other disciplines, such as History and Political Science.
