Assistant Professor in Economic History, Department of Social and Political Sciences, Bocconi University

The Department of Social and Political Sciences at Bocconi University is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor position in Economic History.

The area of specialization is economic and social history. The ideal candidate does high-quality research on long-term historical processes, including those characterizing the preindustrial period, and has at least some demonstrable ability to work with primary (archival) sources. The appointment begins on September 1, 2026.

To complement the existing strengths and profile of the Department, candidates engaged in research employing rigorous quantitative analysis are preferred. Candidates should show evidence of a promising research agenda commensurate with their career stage, and should be doing work that engages with multiple fields of study in the Department— economic history, demography, political science, sociology, applied economics, public administration, health. Candidates should also be able to teach courses in economic history at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Bocconi University is a leading European research and teaching institution in economics, social sciences, management and related disciplines. In the 2025 QS World University Ranking of Social Sciences and Management programs, Bocconi ranked 4th in Europe and 12th worldwide. The Department of Social and Political Sciences provides an ideal interdisciplinary research environment. It comprises approximately 60 tenured or tenure-track faculty members who share an interest in policy-relevant research, addressing questions on numerous world challenges, such as inequality, government responsiveness and accountability, corruption and organized crime, environmental sustainability, global health, and international cooperation. Bocconi is located in Italy's most vibrant center, Milan, a historic, cosmopolitan and international city in a metropolitan area of 3 million that is well connected to the rest of Europe and the world. Knowledge of Italian is not required. Terms of employment are competitive.
