The economic history of Eastern Europe is sometimes written as that of an isolated, peripheral region. In this workshop, we want to emphasise the historical connections between Eastern and Western Europe, as well as to other regions of the world. By reassessing the transnational circulation of people, goods, ideas, techniques, diseases, institutions and other factors, this workshop aims to highlight innovative work that uses new archival data, advanced microdata, or techniques of causal analysis to offer a truly integrated East-West perspective. We also celebrate research that integrates insights and research techniques from multiple disciplines to redefine our understanding of Europe’s complex shared economic, industrial, ideological, and political past.

Target audience:

 This workshop is specifically designed to engage faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and advanced PhD candidates who are deeply involved in the study of economic history, historical political economy, and geography. Our call for papers welcomes work on all countries, historical periods, and methodologies, as long as it retains a significant focus on Central or Eastern Europe.

Location and Venue:

 This two-day workshop is scheduled to take place at Trinity College Dublin from December 13th to 14th, 2024. It will include a series of twelve presentations. We expect participants to email a draft paper to a designated discussant at least one week before the workshop. We are excited to announce Sascha Becker (Monash University) as our keynote speaker.

 The organizers will cover the costs of the venue, along with refreshments such as coffee and tea breaks, and meals including lunch and dinner. There is no registration fee. Additionally, accommodation on campus will be provided for those with financial constraints. Please note that participants are expected to cover their own travel expenses.
