The thirteen critical and well-documented chapters of Women, Work, and Activism examine women’s labor struggle from late nineteenth-century Portuguese mutual societies to Yugoslav peasant women’s work in the 1930s, and from the Catalan labor movement under the Franco dictatorship to workplace democracy in the United States. The authors portray women’s labor activism in a wide variety of contexts including transnational organizing, feminist engagement with men-dominated trade unionism, long-distance migration, and the socialist workplace. The chapters address the involvement of working people in multiple and often unstable labor relations and in unpaid labor, as well as the role of the state and other institutions in shaping the history of women’s labor activism.

Μπορεί ο τρόπος που σκεπτόταν και δρούσε ο Ιωάννης Καποδίστριας ως Κυβερνήτης της Ελλάδος, ότι όλα σχεδόν έπρεπε να γίνουν από την αρχή ακολουθώντας μια αυστηρά ιεραρχημένη πορεία που άμεσα θα ελεγχόταν από αυτόν, να φαίνεται σήμερα σε μας, που έχουμε τη μεταγενέστερη γνώση, ρεαλιστικός, σε μερικούς ακόμη και ορθός, ιδιαίτερα αν δούμε πώς χειρίστηκαν τα μικρά ή τα μείζονα ζητήματα όσοι διοίκησαν τη χώρα στη συνέχεια. Αλλά δεν πρέπει να αγνοούμε ότι, στα καποδιστριακά χρόνια, ναι μεν σταδιακά είχε λήξει ο ένοπλος αγώνας, όμως το επαναστατικό πνεύμα και οι προσδοκίες που αυτό δημιούργησε ήταν ακόμη έντονες, όσο ανεδαφικές κι αν ήσαν κάποιες από αυτές. Όσοι αντιπολιτεύτηκαν τον Κυβερνήτη δεν ήταν μόνον εκμεταλλευτές του απλού λαού και όργανα του ξένου παράγοντα, όπως αυτός και οι οπαδοί του τόνιζαν, αλλά πολλοί από αυτούς είχαν οραματιστεί μια άλλη μετεπαναστατική κοινωνία, φιλελεύθερη, στο σχεδιασμό της οποίας ήλπιζαν ότι θα συμμετείχαν ενεργά. Δεν μπορούσαν επομένως να ανεχθούν το αυταρχικό και αυστηρά ιεραρχημένο καποδιστριακό πρότυπο οργάνωσης του νέου κράτους.

Contributing to a better understanding of contemporary issues of environmental sustainability from a historical perspective, this book provides a cohesive and cogent account of the history of ecological economic thought. The work unearths a diverse set of ideas within a Western and Slavic context, from the Renaissance and the Enlightenment to the late 1940s, to reveal insights firmly grounded in historiographical research and of import for addressing current sustainability challenges, not least by means of improving our grasp on how humans and nature can generously coexist in the long term.
