L’éolienne est une machine de production présente depuis le Moyen Âge en Occident et qui dès l’origine met en œuvre un principe physique et une architecture globale qu’elle conserve encore aujourd’hui. L’histoire proposée dans ce livre s’articule autour de quatre scènes techniques, chacune située à une époque et dans un lieu précis et présentant un type particulier d’éolienne : moulins à huile à Lille aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, moulin électrique au Danemark au tournant du XXe siècle, aérogénérateurs en France dans les années 1950 et éoliennes modernes en Allemagne du Nord à la fin du XXe siècle. Pour chacune de ces scènes, les dynamiques techniques et les dynamiques socio-économiques qui façonnent l’éolienne sont présentées à partir d’une analyse historique détaillée. Sur la base de ces histoires, deux indicateurs de long terme sont définis donnant un éclairage nouveau sur l’histoire de cette machine, articulant recherche technique d’efficacité et exigence sociale de régularité de production.

This volume brings together leading global economic historians to honour Patrick O'Brien's contribution to the establishment of global economic history as a coherent and respected field in the academy. Inspired by O'Brien's seminal work on the British Industrial Revolution as a global phenomenon, these essays expand the role of the Industrial Revolution and British imperial leadership beyond the issue of hierarchy and The Great Divergence. The change from the protective Atlantic empire, 1650-1850, to the free trade empire of the last half of the long nineteenth century is elaborated as are the conscious efforts of the free trade empire to develop markets and market economies in Africa. British domestic politics associated with the change and the continuation to the recent politics of Brexit are fascinatingly narrated and documented, including the economic rationale for imperial expansion, in the first instance.

Το βιβλίο καλύπτει ένα μεγάλο χρονικό και θεματικό εύρος σε μια προσπάθεια να αφηγηθεί τη διαχρονική πορεία του μεγάλου αυτού ιστορικού υποκειμένου. This article present the foundation of the modern Piraeus city between 1833 and 1838 in the light of unpublished archives from the fund of the Greek Ministry of the Interior in King Otto I’s time kept at the General State Archives in Athens. This document shows how immigration to Piraeus was largely channeled by the administration through the establishment of settlements (synoikismoi). It also highlights an original founding of a port city in the Eastern Mediterranean literally out of nowhere. It shows the creation of a community of inhabitants with the essential role of the natives from Chios first, then from Hydra, who form the two main groups, both separated but reunited in the new town, since each group has its own neighborhood, parish and church.
