CfP: Workshop "Oil, oligopolies, and state responses: a global and local history of oil markets, 1860s-1939", Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, 19-20 February 2024
Oil was the most important commodity of the twentieth century. It fundamentally changed societies, markets, and the relationship between states and companies. Oil is a business with high fixed costs, encouraging companies to seek economies of scale and market domination. From the start of the modern industry in the 1860s, the international oil markets within a few decades came to be dominated by a few large vertically integrated global companies. The oil majors at times competed vigorously but mostly colluded in international cartels. This meant that a few large companies tightly controlled the market for the product that societies became increasingly dependent on. All over the world, states had to find a way to deal with the market power of the dominant oil companies. The question of whether and how the authorities should regulate the oil markets became a burning political issue that brought about a diverse array of national strategies.

CfP: "Rethinking the History of Global Capitalism", Center on Global Inequalities, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Rio de Janeiro, 13-15 March 2024
The conference we are organizing in Rio de Janeiro urges scholars to rethink capitalism’s history from the vantage point of this new historical moment and to consider what are the most promising theoretical formulations, methodological approaches, and historical framings to define capitalism, identify its drivers, shed light on its mechanisms, periodize its cycles, incorporate previously neglected spaces or processes, and offer a prognosis of its current reconfiguring. While traditional analyses of capitalism’s history were centered on Europe, the United States, or the North Atlantic, new strands of scholarship recognize that such a narrow lens fails to capture the complexity of the global economy and its history.

Session Proposal "Unearthing the Roots of Inequality: Exploring Land Property Dynamics (from Early Modern times and onwards)", World Economic History Congress (WEHC) 28 July-1 August 2025, Lund, Sweden
While inequality has played a pivotal role in shaping societies and economies worldwide, many authors have argued the importance of studying its historical evolution in order to have a deeper comprehension of its dynamics and determinants (Milanovic et al. 2011; Piketty 2013). Until recently in industrialized regions, and still today in many countries in the Global South, agriculture, and therefore land, was the main source of rents, income and wealth. This session seeks to delve into the intricate web of historical dynamics that influenced land property arrangements from Early Modern times and onwards. Our objective is to foster a comprehensive understanding of the manifold factors that contributed to the often-glaring disparities in land ownership during this transformative period. The proposed session aims to provide a nuanced exploration of the theme by employing a variety of methodologies and case studies, each offering unique insights into the complexities of land property inequality. We contend that the roots of modern land property arrangements can be traced back to this era, and understanding this historical context is essential for comprehending contemporary disparities.

2024 Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History of Capitalism
The History of Capitalism Project at Harvard Business School and Harvard University identifies and supports outstanding scholars whose work responds to the growing interest in the study of global capitalism from a historical perspective. We seek to organize a community of scholars who study aspects of the history of capitalism in all regions of the world and in all chronological periods. Global perspectives are strongly desired, as are contributions from a wide range of variety of disciplines. Hoping to create a global conversation on the history of capitalism, we encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds across the globe, especially from outside Europe and North America.

(2023) Υπάρχει διακριτή «οικονομία των Ελλήνων» ή «ελληνική οικονομία» εντός της ενιαίας οικονομίας της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας και ιδιαίτερα κατά τις προεπαναστατικές δεκαετίες; Ποια ήταν η τύχη της οικονομίας αυτής μετά την εξέγερση και γενικότερα κατά τη διάρκεια της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης; Ποιες αλλαγές παρατηρούνται στην «οικονομία των Ελλήνων» των επαναστατημένων περιοχών, μέσω της «οικονομίας του πολέμου», της ανασφάλειας και των καταστροφών; Πώς συντελέστηκε η μετάβαση από την προεπαναστατική «οικονομία των Ελλήνων» στην οικονομία του ελληνικού κράτους; Ερωτήματα όπως τα παραπάνω οριοθετούν το οικονομικό και κοινωνικό περιβάλλον μέσα στο οποίο ξέσπασε η Επανάσταση του 1821. Οι επιπτώσεις που είχε η Επανάσταση και ο πόλεμος στους ποικίλους τομείς της οικονομίας των επαναστατημένων περιοχών, η λειτουργία της οικονομίας σε συνθήκες πολέμου, αποτέλεσαν μερικά από τα ζητήματα που συζητήθηκαν στις εργασίες του συνεδρίου «Η οικονομία στα χρόνια της Επανάστασης» που οργανώθηκε από το Ινστιτούτο Ιστορικών Ερευνών του Εθνικού Ιδρύματος Ερευνών στις 1 και 2 Οκτωβρίου 2021, με αφορμή τον εορτασμό των 200 χρόνων από την Ελληνική Επανάσταση. Ο τόμος φιλοξενεί δέκα μελέτες που παρουσιάστηκαν στο συνέδριο αυτό.

Konstantinos Chatzis (2023) A history of urban travel demand modeling (UTDM) and its enormous influence on American life from the 1920s to the present.
For better and worse, the automobile has been an integral part of the American way of life for decades. Its ascendance would have been far less spectacular, however, had engineers and planners not devised urban travel demand modeling (UTDM). This book tells the story of this irreplaceable engineering tool that has helped cities accommodate continuous rise in traffic from the 1950s on. Beginning with UTDM's origins as a method to help plan new infrastructure, Konstantinos Chatzis follows its trajectory through new generations of models that helped make optimal use of existing capacity and examines related policy instruments, including the recent use of intelligent transportation systems.

Προσφυγική Εγκατάσταση στη Νίκαια. Σύλλογοι, ταυτότητες και μνήμη
Κυριακή Παπαθανασοπούλου (2023) Η σημερινή Νίκαια (Νέα Κοκκινιά) είναι μια πόλη που ιδρύθηκε από τους πρόσφυγες της Μικρασίας, αποτελώντας τον μεγαλύτερο αστικό και αμιγώς προσφυγικό συνοικισμό του Πειραιά. Η πόλη δημιουργήθηκε με τη βοήθεια των φορέων αποκατάστασης, του κράτους, κάποιων διεθνών οργανισμών, αλλά και την ενεργή συμμετοχή, των ίδιων των προσφύγων μέσα από τους συλλόγους που δημιούργησαν. Η αυτοοργάνωση και οι προσπάθειες που κατέβαλαν οι ίδιοι για την αποκατάσταση και την κοινωνική τους ένταξη συνθέτουν μια αθέατη πτυχή του προσφυγικού ζητήματος. Μέχρι και σήμερα είθισται οι πρόσφυγες να αντιμετωπίζονται ως θύματα. Ωστόσο μια προσέγγιση «από τα κάτω» μεταβάλλει τους πρόσφυγες σε δρώντα υποκείμενα της ιστορίας και συνδιαμορφωτές του τόπου και της ζωής τους, καθώς μέσα στις πόλεις τα άτομα αυτά ζουν, εργάζονται, ψυχαγωγούνται, αθλούνται, κοινωνικοποιούνται, συγκροτούν τις ταυτότητές τους, διεκδικούν και οργανώνονται σε συλλογικότητες.
