Συνέδρια

CfP: Reconstructing and Reimagining the Family: Health sciences and welfare on families in Southeastern Europe (1945 -1989), École Française d’Athènes, Athens, 8 September 2023
The workshop aspires to enrich and nuance our understanding of post-war visions of and approaches to the family through an original geographical and analytical lens. On the one hand, it will chart new research on the countries of the post-war Southeastern Europe (Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania and Turkey), which are understudied in comparison to Western European countries, and which are rarely examined together, owing to their different political systems and social policies. On the other hand, through the concept of health, a notion that was broadened in the post-war period to encompass not only the physical and mental, but also the social, the workshop embarks on a combined exploration of medical and social sciences, along with welfare professions, in shaping discourses and undertaking action on families.

CfP: "Environment, Energy and Economy in the Black Sea Region," The Center for Governance and Culture in Europe (GCE-HSG), Constanţa, Romania, 14-16 September 2023
The rich and complex history of the Black Sea Region is very much entangled with struggles and conflicts over its resources and with empires and nation-states' efforts to manage them. Even currently, international energy, grain, and transportation crises caused by the Russian war on Ukraine are closely connected to the Black Sea. In addition to the obvious energy and economic instability, the war creates numerous ecological challenges and is extremely harmful to the environment. These events and threats in the region create a growing demand for platforms for multidisciplinary analysis and expertise. By examining the region's past and present through various lenses, including politics, governance, economics, social justice, and technology, the conference will contribute to a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the region's development.

CfP 5th Workshop on Business History in Central and Eastern Europe: "Business Cooperation in the History of Central and Eastern Europe", Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, 27-28 October 2023
Business cooperation has been a vital component of economic development throughout history. From ancient merchants forming trade networks to modern multinational corporations, cooperation has allowed for sharing of resources and expertise to mobilize assets to achieve business goals. Business historians accumulated many examples of how cooperative business ventures have facilitated the exchange of goods, the expansion of markets, and the creation of new industries. By working together, businesses can pool their resources and knowledge, overcome obstacles, and increase their chances of success. Cooperation has been a key factor in driving business innovation and growth. From joint ventures and strategic alliances to mergers and acquisitions, businesses have utilized a variety of cooperative arrangements to achieve their goals. In the Middle Ages, guilds provided a framework for skilled artisans to collaborate and mobilize resources, and protect their social interests. During the industrial revolution, corporations emerged as a means for investors to pool capital and resources to finance ambitious projects. Firms also cooperate with the aim of controlling markets and limiting exposure to competition, including trade associations that helped introduce technical standards and shared understandings within an industry or national and international cartels that emerged in the late 19th century and have been legal in many countries until the late 20th century.

Doctoral student in Economic History – Innovation, technology, and mobility, Department of Economic History, LUSEM, Lund University
The research projects span questions about long-run economic growth, innovation, and intergenerational mobility. Both projects use micro-level data and econometric methods to answer questions such as: i) How does innovation and the diffusion of new technologies affect the creation of new types of jobs? What determines who transitions into new work? How does the geography of new job creation change over time?; ii) How age affects innovation, with a particular focus on the demographic transition; and iii) Whether innovation and the diffusion of new technologies leads to increasing or decreasing intergenerational mobility. The projects take a cross-country perspective and span the 18th century to the present day.

Doctoral student in Economic History – Innovation and firm performance, Department of Economic History, LUSEM, Lund University
The research project studies growth and economic development from a micro-level perspective making use of newly collected longitudinal data covering the universe of Swedish manufacturing establishments from the 18th century until the 20th century. These data will be paired with, for example, patent records and individual-level census data to study a set of interrelated questions: i) Why do some firms thrive, while others fail? We study the determinants of firm survival between 1864-1900 focusing in particular on how innovation and the adoption of new technologies affected patterns of firm longevity; ii) Why did firms begin to invent? We analyze the historical shift in innovation from independent inventors to firms, as well as examine its determinants and effects on firm performance; and iii) What determines the adoption of new technologies? We study the determinants of the diffusion of steam and electricity across manufacturing plants, also analyzing the impacts of adoption on employment, productivity, and firm survival.

Technology, Novelty and Luxury
Artemis Yagou (ed.) (2022)
The meaning of luxury is complex, elusive and continuously debated. Among the innumerable facets of luxury, technology is one of the most important, but it is also rather overlooked. The key argument of this edited volume is that technology provides a fundamental background for luxury. The authors analyse technology-related aspects of luxury by focusing on four categories of objects from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: musical instruments, educational toys, pocket watches and furniture. These case studies illustrate how various stakeholders have manipulated technology in order to generate new types of luxury, competing with older ones, and to introduce innovative consumption patterns and fashion trends. This tense and creative process has led to the broadening and reinterpretation of the concept of luxury.

New Perspectives on the Greek War of Independence. Myths, Realities, Legacies and Reflections
Yianni Cartledge, Andrekos Varnava (eds.) (2022)
This book marks the 200-year anniversary of uprisings in the Ottoman Balkans between February and March 1821, which became known in the West as the beginnings of the Greek War of Independence (1821–1832), and led to the formation of the modern Greek state. It explores the war and its impact on societies involved by delving into the myths that surround it, the realities that have often been ignored or suppressed, and its lasting legacies on national identities and histories. It also explores memory and commemoration in Greece, in other countries impacted, and the Greek diaspora. This book offers a fresh perspective on this pivotal event in Greek, Ottoman, Balkan, Mediterranean, European, and world histories. It presents new research and reflections to connect the war to wider history and to understand its importance across the last 200 years.
