The Joan Thirsk Memorial Prize 2023
Submissions are invited for the Joan Thirsk Memorial Prize offered by the British Agricultural History Society in memory of Joan Thirsk (1922–2013).
The Thirsk prize is an annual award for the best book in British and Irish rural or agrarian history employing broadly historical methodology (so works ofsocial anthropology, archaeology or of contemporary rural sociology will not be eligible). There is a single prize of £500 (which may be split) and the committee are allowed to commend other submissions.
The prize was first awarded earlier in 2017 and is now is offered for books published in the calendar year 2022.

CfP Conference "Gender discrimination in Modern Greece", Norwegian Institute, Athens, 26 June 2023
Recent research not only argues that female infanticide and the mortal neglect of female infants was more common in Modern Greece than previously acknowledged, but also that Greek parents continued to treat boys and girls differently throughout childhood (in terms of food and care). These discriminatory practices, arising from a strong son preference and girls’ inferior status, therefore unduly increased female mortality rates early in life and resulted in a significant number of “missing girls” during the 19th century and the fist decades of the 20th century.
The novelty of this argument, together with the problems that Greek historical sources pose, requires further research on these issues, so this conference invites proposals studying discriminatory practices against girls and women in general in Modern Greece. We encourage interdisciplinary discussion, so contributions from a wide range of disciplines (historians, ethnographers, demographers, economists, sociologists, etc.) using both qualitative and quantitative materials are welcome. Given the importance of child abandonment in the past, studies exploring whether sex was an important dimension in the decision to get rid of unwanted babies are also especially valuable.

Commerce, argent, pouvoir. L’impossible avènement d’un capitalisme en Chine, XVIe-XIXe Siècle
François Gipouloux (2022) Le dynamisme de l’économie chinoise depuis la fin des années 1970 et sa position centrale dans les échanges mondiaux invitent à revisiter une période cruciale, celle de la fin de l’époque impériale (XVIe-XIXe siècle). Au cours de ces trois siècles, la Chine, dont l’économie est pourtant très avancée et florissante, voit se creuser l’écart avec les pays de l’Europe du Nord. Pourquoi ?
De multiples explications ont été données de cette longue divergence. Peu de place a pourtant été accordée aux véritables acteurs et aux modalités concrètes de fonctionnement des marchés. C’est cette carence que ce livre entend combler, en donnant la parole aux textes, et en suivant le parcours de trois personnages centraux : le bailleur de fonds, l’intermédiaire, et l’entrepreneur commercial. Réinterroger l’origine de la puissance chinoise, c’est aussi en discerner les lignes de fractures, les points de rupture, les faiblesses. Si la période impériale tardive voit la multiplication de riches marchands, l’entrepreneur capitaliste est absent du paysage. Le capital, fragmenté, n’est pas aisément mobilisable : il est périodiquement détruit ou thésaurisé.

Χρήστος Λούκος (2022) «Το προσωπικό κίνητρο για τη μελέτη της Ερμούπολης ενισχύθηκε από τη γοητεία που είχε η δημιουργία μιας πόλης εκ του μηδενός μέσα στο καμίνι της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης και η πράγματι εντυπωσιακή ανάπτυξή της: αποτέλεσε μια από τις σημαντικότερες πόλεις του ελληνικού κράτους τον 19ο αιώνα και συγχρόνως σημαντικό διαμετακομιστικό κέντρο του διεθνούς εμπορίου μεταξύ Ανατολής και Δύσης, η εμβέλεια του οποίου ήταν αισθητή στις δύο πλευρές του Αιγαίου και γενικότερα στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο. Ήταν φανερό ότι τις τύχες της πόλης στην περίοδο της ακμής της διεύθυνε μια αστική τάξη που διατηρούσε, λόγω της οικονομικής της δύναμης, αρκετή ανεξαρτησία από την κεντρική εξουσία και μπόρεσε να αποτυπώσει τις απόψεις της στη φυσιογνωμία του οικισμού αλλά και σε πολλές όψεις της κοινωνικής ζωής».

Ευάγγελος Χεκίμογλου (2022) Η έκδοση με τίτλο Θεσσαλονίκης εμπόριον 1870-1970. Εισαγωγή στην εμπορική ιστορία και γεωγραφία της πόλης, του δρ Οικονομικής Ιστορίας Ευάγγελου Χεκίμογλου, είναι το αποτέλεσμα διευρυμένης ερευνητικής εργασίας του συγγραφέα. Η έκδοση είχε σημείο εκκίνησης την ομώνυμη έκθεση «Θεσσαλονίκης εμπόριον 1870-1970», η οποία παρουσιάστηκε από το ΠΙΟΠ στη Θεσσαλονίκη το 2017, με αφορμή τα εκατό χρόνια από την πυρκαγιά του 1917. Ο συγγραφέας εμπλούτισε την αρχική έρευνα, παραδίδοντας ένα έργο σύνθετο και εμπεριστατωμένο, πολύτιμο για την επιστημονική κοινότητα αλλά και ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμο και για το ευρύτερο κοινό.
