CfA: A special issue on “pandemics in world economic history” - Economics and Human Biology
We invite contributions for a special issue on “pandemics in world economic history” in the journal “Economics and Human Biology”. If you are interested to participate, please let us know until 30 November; submissions would then be expected until 15 January 2023. Regarding the background, “Economics and Human Biology” is a journal on the relationship between human biology and economic factors with many health economics contributions; about 10% of the contributions are historical studies, mainly on crucial questions related to health, height, and mortality. The impact factor compares very well to the five top economic history journals.

CfP for the International Conference "Branding Mediterranean Europe: Tourism, Transport, and National Identity, 1945-1990", Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Rethymno, Crete, 8-10 June 2023
In the last 60 years, the number of tourists in European Mediterranean countries has multiplied exponentially. In these countries, tourism is one of the largest service industries, therefore building a successful, destination brand is of major concern for the economy. It has also, however, societal and ideational consequences. Competing for the same ‘product’ of tourism on a global scale forms a huge part of nation branding. The narrative and imagery of a country’s attractions feeds into the construction and revamping of national identities. In this sense, tourism can become a map to guide our study of discursive, ideational and cultural changes in Mediterranean Europe, particularly in the period from 1945-1989 but also understand the impact of these discourses on cultural identity; for each one of the countries and the history of Southern Europe as a whole. Management and tourism scholars have long investigated the economic and branding implications of this phenomenon, while in recent years, anthropologists and sociologists have discovered the value of the study of tourism. Yet, the historical depth of their approaches is typically quite limited. We are interested in addressing this lacuna in the period from 1945-1990.

CfP: Cologne FRESH Meeting 2023 "Historical political economy and long-run development", University of Cologne, 24-25 May 2023
Political economy has recently been described as the methodology of economics applied to the analysis of political behavior and institutions. Using history as a laboratory to contribute to political-economic theory and empirics has proven immensely valuable. This encompasses the use of historical data to study institutions and human behavior in the historical context but also to assess the validity of theories in economics and political sciences.
This two-day FRESH workshop will be held in person at the University of Cologne, Germany on May 24-25, 2023. The purpose is to create the opportunity for graduate students and early stage researchers to present and discuss their work in an environment especially focused on constructive feedback and support. The keynote speaker for this meeting will be Sascha Becker, Xiaokai Yang Chair of Business and Economics at Monash University.

CfP: 48th Economic and Business History Society Conference "Building Bridges in Economic and Business History", Porto, Portugal, 24-27 May 2023
The 48th Economic and Business History Society annual conference will be held in Porto, Portugal, on May 24-27, 2023, in partnership with the Arca Comunis Spanish Network of Fiscal History Projects and invites submissions to the conference committee on the theme of Building Bridges in Economic and Business History. At the most recent World Economic History Congress held in Paris, in July 2022, several strong appeals were made to foster interdisciplinary approaches with different areas and connect different historiographies. The organizing committee invites proposals that consider this theme. While the committee will give some preference to papers and panels that fit this theme, the conference committee will also take into consideration papers and panels that engage topics concerned with economic and business history widely construed, including financial and management history and history of economic thought.

CfP: Cambridge World History Workshop (Lent 2023)
The workshop welcomes contributions that give attention to global historical perspectives. We welcome, amongst others, presentations that focus on migration, race, gender, empire, environment, networks, medicine, science and technology, colonial and postcolonial history, transnational history, and comparative history. We encourage presenters to consider their research within the broad framework offered by world history to allow for a productive discussion across various academic sub-fields.

CfP: 2nd International Congress on Business History "Crises, Transitions and Resiliencies: New views on companies in France and in the French speaking world", Paris (France), 15-16 June 2023
In France and in the French-speaking world, companies, like their counterparts in the rest of the world, have been experiencing crises and profound transformations in recent years. The Covid-19 pandemic, which has developed in a lightning fashion since the beginning of 2019, has given rise, as it does after every crisis, to numerous analyses on the changes in the economic world. These questions have been rekindled and sharpened, particularly in Europe, by the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, which, in particular, is dealing serious blows to the world trade system and, through it, to the globalization of the years 2000-2010. As always, many commentators have wondered and continue to wonder whether the 'world after' will be the same as before.

The call for application is situated in the context of the Katekisama exchange program of the Universities of Basel (Switzerland) and Bonn (Germany) with further partners from Ghana and Japan currently signing up to the program. The initiative is designed to establish new academic mobility and exchange in teaching and research. Στρατής Ανδρεάδης (2022) Η Αυτοβιογραφία του Στρατή Ανδρεάδη παρουσιάζεται για πρώτη φορά στο ελληνικό αναγνωστικό κοινό, που έχει την ευκαιρία να «ακούσει» την ίδια τη φωνή του «Καθηγητή», ενός από τους επιδραστικότερους οικονομικούς παράγοντες του 20ού αιώνα στη χώρα μας. Η έκδοση συμπληρώνεται με επιστημονικό επίμετρο του ιστορικού Άγγελου Δρουγούτη, σχεδιασμένο ώστε να εντάξει την πρωτοπρόσωπη αφήγηση του Ανδρεάδη εντός του μεγάλου ιστορικού και οικονομικού πλαισίου της μεταπολεμικής Ελλάδας και να αναδείξει το σωστό της μέγεθος, όπως και την κομβική σημασία των εταιρειών που ίδρυσε και ανέδειξε ο Ανδρεάδης ‒ και στις οποίες οφείλεται, κατά πολύ, το ελληνικό μεταπολεμικό οικονομικό θαύμα.

Mediterranean Seafarers in Transition. Maritime Labour, Communities, Shipping and the Challenge of Industrialization 1850s — 1920s
Apostolos Delis, Jordi Ibarz, Anna Sydorenko, Matteo Barbano (eds) (2022) This volume discusses the effects of industrialization on maritime trade, labour and communities in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from the 1850s to the 1920s. The 17 essays are based on new evidence from multiple type of primary sources on the transition from sail to steam navigation, written in a variety of languages, Italian, Spanish, French, Greek, Russian and Ottoman.
Questions that arise in the book include the labour conditions, wages, career and retirement of seafarers, the socio-economic and spatial transformations of the maritime communities and the changes in the patterns of operation, ownership and management in the shipping industry with the advent of steam navigation. The book offers a comparative analysis of the above subjects across the Mediterranean, while also proposes unexplored themes in current scholarship like the history of navigation.

Εθνική Άμυνα και Εθνικά Χρέη. 200 χρόνια ελληνικής οικονομίας
Μιχαήλ Ζουμπουλάκης, Χρήστος Κόλλιας (2021) Ο Λόρδος Βύρωνας αναφέρεται στα Δάνεια της Ανεξαρτησίας στο ποίημα Δον Ζουάν: «Κάθε δάνειο δεν είναι απλώς ένα κερδοσκοπικό χτύπημα, αλλά εδραιώνει ένα έθνος ή ανατρέπει έναν θρόνο». Από την άλλη, ο Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος τόνιζε εμφατικά: «…θα ήτο εσχάτη αφέλεια να πιστεύση κανείς, ότι ημπορεί να υπάρξει κράτος ανεξάρτητον, χωρίς να διαθέτη ανάλογον και καλώς οργανωμένην στρατιωτικήν δύναμιν». Κάποιες χώρες είναι ευνοημένες από τη γεωγραφία καθώς από τον γεωπολιτικό περίγυρό τους απουσιάζουν οι διακρατικές εντάσεις και οι συγκρουσιακές σχέσεις. Η Ελλάδα δεν συγκαταλέγεται μεταξύ αυτών. Ήταν και είναι καταδικασμένη να ευημερήσει σε ένα ρευστό και ασταθές γεωπολιτικό περιβάλλον. Οι αμυντικές δαπάνες είναι το ετήσιο ασφάλιστρο που καταβάλλει για να προστατεύσει τα εθνικά συμφέροντα και τα κυριαρχικά δικαιώματά της. Η αδήριτη γεω-πολιτική πραγματικότητα δεν της επιτρέπει την πολυτέλεια άλλης επιλογής. Αυτή η αναγκαστική επένδυση στην ασφάλειά της την επιβαρύνει δημοσιονομικά και της στερεί πολύτιμα αναπτυξιακά βοηθήματα. Ωστόσο, οι αμυντικές δαπάνες δεν ήταν η μήτρα που γέννησε όλα τα δημοσιονομικά δεινά της Ελλάδας στη μεταπολεμική και κυρίως στη μεταπολιτευτική περίοδο.

Αόρατη Εργασία και Τεχνολογία σε Έργα Ψηφιοποίησης στην Ελλάδα, 2004-2020
Αλέξανδρος Παναγόπουλος (2022) Σκοπός της έρευνας είναι η ανάδειξη της αόρατης εργασίας που απαιτείται για τη μετατροπή μιας αναλογικής τεχνικής υποδομής πληροφορίας σε ψηφιακή. Η κεντρική ιδέα πίσω από αυτή βρίσκεται στη διαπίστωση ότι ο ηγεμονικός λόγος γύρω από τις «έξυπνες μηχανές, την ψηφιακότητα και τον ψηφιακό μετασχηματισμό των τελευταίων είκοσι ετών δεν είναι ουδέτερος και χρησιμοποιείται, ανάμεσα σε άλλα, για την υποτίμηση και απαξίωση της εργασίας. Χρησιμοποιώντας θεωρητικά εργαλεία και μεθοδολογικά σχήματα από την Ιστορία της Τεχνολογίας και τις Σπουδές Επιστήμης και Τεχνολογίας (Επιστήμη, Τεχνολογία, Κοινωνία) – ιδίως την προσέγγιση «τεχνολογία κατά τη χρήση» (technology-in-use) – η μελέτη εστιάζει στην εργασιακή αλυσίδα που σχεδιάστηκε και εφαρμόστηκε σε τρία έργα ψηφιοποίησης τη χρονική περίοδο 2004-2020 στην Ελλάδα. Στα έργα αυτά απασχολήθηκαν δεκάδες εργαζόμενοι διαφορετικών ειδικοτήτων, των οποίων όμως η απαιτητική, κοπιώδης και δημιουργική εργασία παρέμεινε αόρατη τόσο για τους τελικούς χρήστες του ψηφιακού αρχείου όσο και για τους ίδιους τους υπεύθυνους της διαδικασίας ψηφιοποίησης αφού, προκειμένου να αντιμετωπιστούν τα προβλήματα που προέκυψαν κατά την υλοποίηση των έργων, οι εργαζόμενοι χρησιμοποίησαν τη φαντασία, τη δημιουργικότητα και επινοητικότητά τους, στοιχεία που ξεπερνούσαν κατά πολύ το πλαίσιο των προκαθορισμένων καθηκόντων τους. Αυτή η δημιουργική εργασία ωστόσο δεν αναγνωρίστηκε από την πλευρά των εργοδοτών ως τέτοια ούτε σε επίπεδο αμοιβής ούτε σε επίπεδο βελτίωσης της παρεχόμενης υπηρεσίας παρά το γεγονός ότι υπήρξε ο καθοριστικός παράγοντας για την ολοκλήρωση των έργων. Παράλληλα, μέσα από την έρευνα αναδεικνύονται τα χαρακτηριστικά ενός εργατικού δυναμικού που απασχολείται στον χώρο της αρχειακής πληροφορίας, δυναμικού φθηνού, κατά βάση νεανικού και γυναικείου, προσωρινής απασχόλησης ως επί το πλείστον και που συνδέεται στενά με το τοπίο της επισφαλούς εργασίας των τελευταίων ετών ενώ εγγράφεται στο πλαίσιο της περιορισμένης ανθρώπινης παρέμβασης σε σχέση με τις σύγχρονες ψηφιακές τεχνολογίες.
