Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780-1960
Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption. We ask to what extent the history of tobacco allows new insights into the tension between the imperial integration of a metropole and its colonies, and the global entanglement of places and peoples within and beyond empires. Changing regimes of consumption, knowledge, myth-making, trade, and work, are central fields of recent commodity studies, and deserve particular attention. To this end, we aim to apply insights from economic and cultural history, but also from political, social, psychological, and environmental history. While Western overseas empires have tended to attract most attention, we welcome contributions on all countries and all empires.

Call for Papers: Forms of trade regulation. 4th International Workshop: The spatial implications of trade regulations (Middle Ages and Early Modern Times), 10-12 June 2021
After the three meetings in 2017, 2018, and 2019, the investigation into The forms of trade regulations in medieval and modern Europe continues with a fourth and final international conference on the spatial dimension of professional regulations. While Europe, in a broad sense, has been chosen as a starting point, papers could also consider other cultural areas or colonial experiences. As a reminder, regulations are viewed as a process, from the making of the rules to their implementation, without being restricted either to the written and stabilised forms of the statutes or to organisations of a corporative nature: royal or local orders, judicial precedents, or unwritten customs could also be part of the normative framework of trades, just as non-institutional groups could regulate themselves through the manufacture or sale of a particular product.
The diffusion and spatial concentration of these different types of regulations in medieval and early modern societies can thus be investigated on various scales: from the much discussed area of influence of local trade associations to the norms that apply to larger territories or networks, such as the legislations on prices and wages adopted by several kingdoms after the end of the 13th century, the Hanseatic Leagues, the inspection of factories, journeymen’s associations, and so on.

Κωνσταντίνος Καντιώτης, Κερκυραίος. Ελάσσων Φιλικός, αγωνιστής της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης
Βασίλης Παναγιωτόπουλος (2019) Η ανασύσταση της ιστορίας ενός προσώπου που ανήκει στα μεσαία στρώματα του πλήθους των πατριωτών που προετοίμασαν την επανάσταση του 1821, αποτελεί μια περίπλοκη ιστοριογραφική πρόκληση. Η γραφίδα ενός έμπειρου ιστορικού ερευνά και αποτυπώνει έναν Φιλικό, χωρίς προσωπικό αρχείο. Ο Κωνσταντίνος Καντιώτης γεννήθηκε στην Κέρκυρα, σπούδασε στην Πάδοβα, παντρεύτηκε στην Αγία Πετρούπολη το 1820 και πέθανε γύρω στα 1840. Πρόκειται για έναν «αρχιοικονόμο», έναν «κρατικό λειτουργό», που ζει και ταξιδεύει στην Ευρώπη, στη σκιά των μεγάλων ανδρών της ελληνικής επανάστασης, συμμετέχει σε επαναστατικά σχέδια, σε κοινές προσδοκίες, βιώνει αντικρουόμενα συναισθήματα και φιλίες. Τα προσωπικά του τεκμήρια λανθάνουν και η ιστορία του ανασυγκροτείται μέσα από τις μαρτυρίες των άλλων. Ακόμη και ένα δείγμα προσωπικής γραφής του ανακαλύπτεται ως σημείωση σε επιστολή του 1821, του Ιγνατίου Ουγγροβλαχίας.

Οθωμανικές αφηγήσεις για την Ελληνική Επανάσταση. Από τον Γιουσούφ Μπέη στον Αχμέτ Τζεβντέτ Πασά
Σοφία Λαΐου, Μαρίνος Σαρηγιάννης (2019) Στην έως τώρα ακαδημαϊκή συζήτηση για την Ελληνική Επανάσταση σε μεγάλο βαθμό απουσίαζε η οθωμανική πλευρά. Στο παρόν βιβλίο, η Σοφία Λαΐου και ο Μαρίνος Σαρηγιάννης παρουσιάζουν για πρώτη φορά με συστηματικό τρόπο την πρόσληψη της Επανάστασης από την οθωμανική πολιτική ελίτ. Από την εξέλιξη της οθωμανικής πολιτικής σκέψης έως την ερμηνεία των γεγονότων της Επανάστασης από τους ιστοριογράφους της Υψηλής Πύλης (Σανί-ζαντέ, Εσάτ και Μπαχίρ Εφέντη, Τζεβντέτ Πασά) το βιβλίο αναδεικνύει τους τρόπους που η Ελληνική Επανάσταση επέδρασε στην οθωμανική πολιτική ορολογία και σκέψη. Απέναντι στα κείμενα των επίσημων ιστοριογραφών οι συγγραφείς αναδεικνύουν παράλληλα την ανέκδοτη μαρτυρία του Γιουσούφ Μπέη, αξιωματούχου της Υψηλής Πύλης και αυτόπτη μάρτυρα των γεγονότων στην Πελοπόννησο, η μετάφραση της οποίας εκδίδεται στο δεύτερο μέρος.

Δεν είν’ ο περσινός καιρός… Έλληνες κλεφταρματολοί και Αλβανοί στασιαστές (1829-1831)
Βασίλης Κ. Γούναρης (2019) Κατά το τέλος του πολέμου της ελληνικής ανεξαρτησίας (1829-1831), τα προτεινόμενα σύνορα της Ελλάδας άλλαξαν τρεις φορές. Οι πιέσεις για τη δημιουργία τακτικού στρατού και συνθηκών ασφάλειας στις παραμεθόριες περιοχές και η ρευστότητα για το μέλλον τους έφεραν τους έλληνες και αλβανούς πολεμιστές, μετά από δεκαετή σύρραξη, σε δεινή θέση. Οι επιλογές των ενόπλων περιορίζονταν και η ευημερία τους απειλούνταν. Η βασική μέθοδος αντίδρασης ήταν κοινή: να διαπραγματευτούν σκληρά τη θέση τους πριν συνθηκολογήσουν, ακόμη κι αν αυτό σήμαινε στάση και εμφύλιες συγκρούσεις. Στην απέναντι πλευρά, ο Καποδίστριας και ο Κιουταχής, έπρεπε να επιδείξουν αποφασιστικότητα και να αυτοσχεδιάσουν, ώστε να διατηρήσουν το κύρος τους, και να εξασφαλίσουν τις επαρχίες που κινδύνευαν να χάσουν. Ο έστω άτυπος σχηματισμός μεθορίου ανάγκασε τελικά πολεμιστές και πολιτικούς να μεταβάλουν τις τακτικές τους και να αναθεωρήσουν τις συμμαχίες τους.

European Investment in Greece in the Nineteenth Century: A Behavioural Approach to Financial History
Korinna Schönhärl (2020) Banking historiography often does not sufficiently take into account bankers’ deliberations of their decision making, but rather limits investigation to considerations of profit maximisation. This book shows that the decision-making processes of nineteenth-century bankers contemplating high-risk financial markets like Greece are just as complex as present-day investment decisions.
The book, now published in English after a first German edition, offers in-depth studies of decision making in concrete historical situations, considering political and economic circumstances and also the individual background of the actors concerned, including a reflection on the influence of cultural movements such as Philhellenism. Employing methodological inspirations from the field of behavioural finance, the book analyses a broad range of published and unpublished English, French, Greek, German and Swiss sources on European investment in Greece between 1821 and the Balkan wars. Additionally, rich insights into Greek economic history, the economic integration of the country into Europe and long-lasting European stereotypes of Southern Europe and Greece are provided; this furthers understanding of the historical background of the Greek financial crisis after 2009.

Τα λαϊκά στρώματα στη Θεσσαλονίκη του μεσοπολέμου (1922-1940): κοινωνική και πολιτική διάσταση της φτώχειας
Κωνσταντίνος Γ. Τζιάρας (2017) Η διδακτορική διατριβή αναφέρεται στην ιστορία των φτωχών στρωμάτων στη Θεσσαλονίκη του μεσοπολέμου. Στόχο της μελέτης αποτέλεσε η απόδοση της από κάτω εικόνας της κοινωνίας, η ανίχνευση των μηχανισμών επιβίωσης και η περιγραφή των περισσότερο ή λιγότερο πολιτικών εκφράσεων των φτωχών-επικίνδυνων τάξεων. Ταυτόχρονα αναλύεται η επιχείρηση του κράτους και των μηχανισμών του να αναλάβει το μονοπώλιο της βίας κανοναρχώντας κάθε έκφραση κοινωνικής και πολιτικής δραστηριότητας στο ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρον και τεταμένο πλαίσιο του μεσοπολέμου.
