CfP: "Economic and Social History: Past, Present and Future", 40th Conference of the Portuguese Economic and Social History Association, Nova School of Business and Economics, Carcavelos Campus, 20-21.11.2020
The Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History turns 40 and the date is a good motive to assess the evolution of this academic field and its prospects. Economic and Social History changed deeply between 1980 and 2020. Throughout this period, the discipline has progressively expanded its research interests beyond the old macro-narratives centred on economic growth or the concepts of social class or status. Although these topics continue to be well alive, the agenda of Economic and Social History has expanded to include new dimensions: institutions, education, inequality, firms, gender or ethnic groups. Due to the open nature of the subject of this year’s conference, we invite all researchers in economic and social history to submit proposal for panels or individual papers on the topics they are currently developing, thus showcasing the thematic richness that defines this academic field today. As is usual in APHES’ conferences, proposal or panels on any historical period are accepted. Deadline extension for proposals: 20.6.2020

Call for Papers: Hidden Economies of Slavery
Call for PapersHidden Economies of SlaveryDate: 10-11 December 2020 Venue: German Historical Institute London Closing date: 30 June 2020 International Workshop co-organized by Melina Teubner (University of Bern) and Felix Brahm (German Historical Institute London) In many cases, abolition did not bring about an end to slavery. Local economies often continued to rely on slavery, and new forms of unfree labour were invented that involved new places and peoples. Not seldomly private as well as state actors carried on investing in, or operating ventures based on slavery, though less openly.

2 PhD positions within the project "Missing Girls in Historical Europe"
The Department of Modern History and Society at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Trondheim) offers 2 full-time 3-year PhD positions within the project "Missing Girls in Historical Europe", funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR). Preliminary evidence reconstructing infant and child sex ratios, the number of boys per hundred girls, in 19th-century European countries suggests that gender discrimination resulting in excess female mortality in infancy and childhood in historical Europe was much more important than previously thought (especially in Southern and Eastern Europe). This project seeks to (1) trace the importance of missing girls, and thus the extent of discriminatory practices, in historical Europe (c.1700-1950); (2) identify the type of families that were more likely to be involved in this kind of behaviour; and (3) address to what extent discriminatory practices in infancy and childhood are the result of structural socio-economic features (such as the lack of labour opportunities for women, among others) or temporary shocks (associated with famines or other mortality crises).
